MARION — Marion Harding High School will host 29 other teams from around Ohio at the 42nd annual Marion Harding Wrestling Classic this Friday and Saturday.
Also, three new awards will be given out to honor former coaches.
Former Harding principal and wrestling coach Mike McCreary will present an award in his name to a wrestler of his choice. Former coach Ed Marvich will present an award to a lightweight wrestler, and former coach Ed Henning will present an award to a heavyweight wrestler.
Tournament director and assistant coach Brent Gorenflo said all three men have been instrumental to the wrestling program’s history.
“We want to honor our past,” he said.
Gorenflo said the Harding squad consists of four freshman, one sophomore, three juniors and two seniors. He said the tournament is a good opportunity for the fans and players.
“It’s very cool to have this home event in front of a home crowd,” he said. “We get people who don’t get to see a whole lot of wrestling.”
Gorenflo said teams from all around Ohio will be in Marion for the tournament, including teams from around Marion, Cleveland, Columbus, Ashland, Findlay and Lima.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Preliminary rounds are Friday. Semi-finals and finals are Saturday.
Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students per session, or $15 for adults, $10 for students for an all-tournament pass that includes all three sessions.
