Grant Middle School (GMS) staff has been working to accomplish this vision with ALL students. On a daily basis this vision is being realized by our staff and students through countless experiences and opportunities. In addition, this has been evident on our 2016 state report card as GMS earned 3 A’s for Value Added. In turn this means students grew more than expected in tested subject areas compared to their peers in the state and met expected year’s growth in other areas. During the 2016-17 our staff and students have been building upon this accomplishment to provide better educational options to students.
To begin, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People are being implemented through Leader In Me on a daily basis. GMS students have been involved in monthly leadership breakfasts, three leadership days with parents/guardians and community members that encompass the habits and their career interests. Student career interests have been identified through a career interest inventory and multiple meetings with career advisors. Students will be able to use this information to pick a career pathway at Harding High School (HHS). All students have the opportunity to be involved in Diploma Plus at HHS where students will earn more than a high school diploma or an opportunity to enroll in Marion City Schools’ Graduate Pathway to Success early college high school program. This year approximately 40 GMS students will be accepted into the early college high school program. These opportunities begin at Grant Middle School.
GMS offers rigorous and innovative learning opportunities for ALL students. Literacy Collaborative has been implemented in English Language Arts classrooms where writing and reading instruction are tailored to students’ individual needs. Math classrooms use Next Generation Learning Environments to personalize math instruction to meet students’ individual needs through whole class instruction, small groups or independent learning. Students in 7th and 8th grade have the opportunity to choose their own elective classes, which include Spanish, Pre-Engineering, Robotics, Stem Classes, PE or Fitness Opportunities or Art courses. Finally, students at GMS have the opportunity to earn multiple high school credits through ELA Literature 9, Algebra 1, Spanish 1, Biology, or Pre-Engineering. These opportunities are available to every student at GMS.
In addition, GMS has the most amazing music department. Students are able to participate in band or choir programs that receive state awards and accolades on a yearly basis. Or, they can try out for the musical that would rival most high school musicals. Students with mathematical or problem-solving skills can join the middle school robotics team, which has made it to the world competition for the last three years. These are just a few of the great opportunities available for GMS students.
