Ohio has developed the Early Learning Assessment, an assessment for preschool-aged children, as part of its Ready for Kindergarten Assessment System. It helps teachers determine if children are ready for kindergarten by assessing children from 3 to 6 years old.
The assessment focuses on seven areas:
- Social foundations (including social and emotional development and approaches toward learning)
- Social studies
- Language and literacy
- Physical well-being and motor development
- Fine arts
Once the assessment is complete, teachers have information that they can share with parents about how a child is developing. It helps teachers and parents work together to help children start kindergarten ready to learn.
