SB29 Information

In accordance with Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB 29), Marion City Schools is committed to safeguarding student data privacy and ensuring transparency regarding the digital software used in our classrooms.

Under SB 29, school districts are required to inform parents and guardians about third-party technology providers—including learning software, digital applications, curriculum programs, and assessment platforms—that access student educational records. The law establishes strict standards for data protection and vendor accountability:

  • Data Ownership & Security: Student educational records remain the sole property of the school district. Third-party technology vendors are legally bound to maintain rigorous administrative, physical, and technical safeguards.

  • Prohibition of Commercial Exploitation: Technology providers are strictly prohibited from selling student data, marketing to students, or using student data for commercial purposes.

  • Mandatory Disclosure & Public Access: Districts maintain an up-to-date registry detailing all approved software contracts and privacy agreements, allowing families to inspect the digital tools used in their child's education.

To fulfill our statutory obligations and provide families with clear insight into our digital resources, Marion City Schools maintains an active registry of all approved instructional technologies and vendor agreements.

Device Monitoring

Educational purposes such as instruction, technical support, and exam proctoring are acceptable and approved reasons for device and account monitoring. This monitoring also ensures compliance with federal and state funding requirements, including the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). CIPA mandates that schools monitor online activity and implement safeguards to block harmful content.

  • Purpose: Monitoring helps us identify and prevent access to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and unsafe online behavior. It ensures a secure and focused digital learning environment.
  • Senate Bill 29 Compliance: In accordance with Ohio law, we are committed to informing families about how and why student devices are monitored, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Privacy & Security: While we value student privacy, monitoring is necessary to maintain a safe educational space. All data collected is used strictly for safety and educational purposes, in line with district policies and legal guidelines.
Marion City Schools uses GoGuardian monitoring software at the district and classroom levels to monitor online student behavior and ensure students remain in a safe and focused online learning environment.
